I really need to get this off my chest, and Facebook is too intrusive, so WordPress will do. As my username may suggest, I’m a Flames fan and Jarome Iginla is my favorite player. Turns out Iggy signed a 1 year, $6 million deal with the Boston Bruins today. It devastated me to see him leave Calgary, and hurt even more when he came so close to winning this year. I wanted to see Iggy stay in Pittsburgh; in my opinion they never utilized him properly. He still performed extremely well, but truth be told he wasn’t fast enough for a team like the Penguins. I would have liked if he stayed and played with Crosby, but I suppose his price was just too great for a team with several superstars to pay in the first place. I hate the Bruins, especially Lucic and Marchand, just classless players in my opinion. However, I think Iggy will do well with the Bruins; they’re a checking team, and don’t rely on speed as heavily as the Pens do. For that reason he should be a good fit, and he will have some talented (albeit dirty) linemates. Boston’s team itself did just change rather radically; they traded away Seguin (I’ve no idea why, I always thought he was a solid young player), lost Horton to free agency (although I suppose Iggy is his replacement), Ference to free agency (I hear was a quite an effective defenceman) as well as Jagr to free agency (but he wasn’t a pivotal part of the team). That being said, I really hope Boston can work through the changes and come together to win the Cup next season, because no one deserves it more than Iginla does. I guess this means I’ll support Boston for a season, but will do so grudgingly…they’ve just been so classless in a plethora of situations, and their diving is unbelievable. Iginla will bring some great leadership though, hopefully he can straighten out a lot of the wrongdoing in Boston.
A lot of teams changed significantly today, with free agency under way. Among the bigger changes, Daniel Alfredsson, long-time captain of the Ottawa Senators, signed with the Detroit Red Wings. Detroit has been a model team for many years, and after this year’s free agency they got a lot stronger. I understand how upset Sens fans must be right now, this situation is really similar to when Iggy got traded to Pittsburgh from the Flames. If Sens fans love Alfie as much as they supposedly do, I’m sure the move will sting but they’ll get over it and support him fully. Ottawa made up for the loss by signing Bobby Ryan of the Anaheim Ducks; he should be a pretty good replacement.
Although a lot of teams did well today in free agency, to me the winners today are Detroit and Nashville. Calgary didn’t do anything very useful, but I’m no longer surprised, their management is horrid.
All in all it was an exciting day, and I really, really hope Boston can win the Cup for Iggy.
