As you know, the American government partially shut down today, as the Republicans and the Democrats could not agree on a way to spend their money. Thousands of Americans are now on furlough as Congress and the HOR “try” to bring this to an end.
There are a large number of reasons for this event, and a large number of events that are also at hand; among the more prominent ones are the fiscal crisis and the debate over ObamaCare. Both of these topics require a large amount of background knowledge, so I won’t delve deep into the details. Instead, I’ll simply offer my opinion on the mess that is the American government right now.
There hasn’t been a government shut down for seventeen years; the fact that there is one now, and for such trivial reasons, illuminates the ineptitude of the vast majority of American governmental figures. The reason why the GOP led HOR has refused to cooperate with the Democrats is only because of ObamaCare, the controversial health care plan of Obama. The plan is not a terrible one, but it has its faults; however, it is not such an issue that necessitates the shut down of the entire government. This is WRONG; it is a blatant abuse of power. The GOP has taken issue with one Democratic policy in particular, and is forcing a government shut down because of their refusal to cooperate over a SINGLE policy. It’s an absolutely disgusting move on the part of the Republicans.
Yes, Obama’s role as Head of State has not been perfect. However, he is actively working to get America out of the mess he adopted from Bush; but whenever he tries to push through a law that will actually do something, he gets shot down by the GOP led HOR. The Republicans would disagree with Obama if he stated that the sky is blue, that’s how much they play the devil’s advocate with him. Instead of trying to reach a compromise with the Democrats over spending on health care, they are intent on shutting down government, sending home thousands of people who aren’t even directly or immediately affected by the decisions made in Congress; they’re playing a game of chicken with the Democrats, and are childishly refusing to back down from what they deem to be “correct.”
Only in America do we see such a volatile, uncooperative government, and it is due solely to the fact that there is a strict two party program in America. In America, you’re either a Democrat or a Republican; there’s no middle ground. It’s not the worst form of government, but I really don’t think it’s the best either. I firmly believe that America has too many checks and balances of power for its own good. Yes, the checks and balances are what make the government famous, but there are so many that it is almost impossible to achieve something of political value in today’s era. For example, the gun policy; any half-educated man can tell you that the answer to guns is not more guns, but because (sadly) a small portion of the government does, no policy has been passed regarding gun possession. This is another great topic to discuss, and I hope to do so soon.
The point is that with all the checks and balances in the government working against each other, nothing of value can be done, since there will always be someone opposing it. Almost every single American is opposed to a government shut down, including Republican party supporters. However, they do not get a say in the government any more. America’s government is supposed to be a model to the world, but it’s only embarrassing itself right now. There are too many checks and balances in place; it’s made clear when, despite the wishes of the masses, forty odd politicians can cause a government shut down. It’s shameful to see elected men act this way.
The government shut down may last a long time, but I think some kind of agreement will be reached sooner rather than later…the Americans won’t stand for such a state long (I hope). It’ll be interesting to see how they work out the mess they’re in right now, especially considering the economic nightmare they’re in. Whatever happens, I’d love to share my opinion again, and I hope you found this piece moving, no matter which direction it swayed you.
