It’s almost been a couple weeks since Nelson Mandela passed away. I haven’t been able to post on this topic due to time restrictions, but I hope to do justice to his memory right now.
Mandela was a gift to this world. I’d be amazed if the world ever again sees someone with a character anywhere near Mandela’s. I’m not going to highlight the peaks of his life, but rather draw some attention to it. It was his efforts that desegregated and brought together a nation, and showed the world how much good humans are capable of. He was the ideal of a man; if ever there was a model human being, it was Nelson Mandela. Despite being put through so much hardship, hardship that seems unimaginable to us, he rose above it, chose to forgive rather than fight fire with fire, and made the world a better place for it. I’ll never stop being awed by how he chose to forgive those who jailed him for almost three decades, and instead bettered the flaws of his nation. He was an amazing man, plain and simple.
The world needs more men like Nelson Mandela. Things like that are easy to state, and easier to wish for. Instead of just speaking, we need to take action. Everyone can better the world by taking a little bit of time out of their day, to fix something in their character they know is wrong, to help someone in need, to embrace peace and love rather than violence and hatred; it’s what Mandela did. If everyone in the world can change one little thing in their life that echoes the principles embraced by Mandela, the world could be a much better place. I certainly will try to practice what I preach, and follow the example set by Nelson Mandela – may he rest in peace; he now belongs to the ages.
