Team Canada’s mens’ hockey team won their first game of the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympics by a score of 3-1. A win is a win, but this win certainly wasn’t the match that the country was hoping for.
By all means, Canada should have dominated the whole game and won by an outrageous score. Their talent is so deep that they can put most teams to shame. We didn’t see that in this game. For most of the game, Norway stood toe to toe with Canada, and really gave them a run for their money. If it wasn’t for a poor Norweigan showing in the second period, Canada would have had a much harder time winning this game.
As fans, we can only hope the team does better on the journey to a gold medal. I thought Carey Price played well in this match, as the decision to start him instead of Luongo surprised some fans. However, Price wasn’t tested with too many difficult saves, so it’s difficult to say if he’s the goalie for the rest of the tournament; I think tht question will be answered after we see how Luongo plays tomorrow against Austria. Otherwise, most of the players seemed to have good chemistry. I hope today was just a day of nerves; the players should do much better for the rest of the tournament. I thought Canada could improve by shooting more often and having more traffic in front of the net, so let’s see if they do that tomorrow.
One decision that did surprise me was that PK Subban was a healthy scratch for this game. Subban is the reigning Norris Trophy winner; he was the best defenseman in the NHL last season. I really think they should have used him instead of Marc-Edouard Vlasic (the decision to even add him to the team still shocks me). The team would have benefitted by the offensive presence of Subban, and also his physicality. I hope he gets to play tomorrow.
Canada plays Austria tomorrow, in another match that should be an easy win for them. I hope they play better than they did in today’s game, as it will definitely help boost confidence. I’m looking forward to tomorrow’s game, as I’m sure a whole nation is. I’ll share my thoughts with you on it as soon as I can!
