Team Canada is set to face Team Sweden in the mens’ ice hockey gold medal game tomorrow, as the Sochi 2014 Winter Olympic Games come to a close.
I missed most of Canada’s last two games, a 2-1 victory against Latvia in the quarterfinals and a 1-0 victory against the Americans in the semifinals. Both the games were extremely close, and Canada was certainly outplayed for the majority of the period. The team hasn’t performed anywhere as well as fans and experts thought they would, but if they win gold against a very good Swedish team, all will be forgiven.
Team Sweden has easily been one of the most impressive teams in the hockey tournament so far. They play a fast game and boast a depth that only a few teams had. They’ll certainly bring the game to Canada, a team that still looks like it hasn’t found the perfect chemistry. I don’t think the best team was picked this year, with a couple big snubs and a couple eyebrow-raising selections. Even the captain Sidney Crosby has yet to find his groove, and most of Team Canada’s goals have come from its defensemen. Regardless, a win is a win, especially when it comes to Olympic gold, so I hope Canada can pull through tomorrow!
The game is at 5 am locally, which is very early by my standards. Had it been at a later time, I really would have enjoyed meeting with some friends to watch the game. Still, the game promises to be fun, and hopefully a lot of more great memories are made by the play of the team. The whole nation will set an early alarm clock tomorrow. Go Canada go!
