The name of this blog is a funny one – it doesn’t really seem to make sense. So what was I trying to get at when I named the blog “Abstract Horizons”? To be honest, it was a bit of a whimsical name, but there was some thought behind it.
To me, a horizon represents a limit. The horizon of a landscape seems to be the furthest aerial view of the city; it’s how far we can see from where we are. A horizon is like a boundary imposed on a landscape, in my opinion at least. There is beauty to it, but to me it will always be a limit.
Abstract. It’s something that can’t be physically conceived. An abstract notion is one that can be held only in mind, and cannot be represented physically. When you then mash the two seemingly unrelated words together, you get the name of this blog. I think the limits we set on our goals and on ourselves are things that are nothing but mindgames. We are the masters of our destiny; any restrictions we convince ourselves we have are fictional. So with the title of the blog, I was trying to get at the idea that anything is possible, and I try to keep a similarly upbeat feel for the blog itself.
I won’t lie, a bit of choosing the name was whimsical. When I got two interestingly unrelated words together and decided it had a positive connotation (and was able to reverse-engineer a meaning), I stuck to it. I wanted it to be original, and I think it is. That’s all there is to the title of the blog – nothing more, nothing less.
