It’s that time of the year again. The best time of the year to be a hockey fan. It’s the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and I couldn’t be more excited this year.
As you know, I’m cheering for the Boston Bruins to win the Stanley Cup, as I want to see Jarome Iginla hoist the trophy. This could be the year. The Bruins were the best team in the regular season, and probably the team with the greatest depth and goaltending as well. That being said, the playoffs is a new slate. Nothing in the regular season matters come playoff time. Still, if the Bruins ever look like they’re going to win the Cup, this is the year.
The Bruins will play the Detroit Red Wings in the first round, starting on Friday. This actually makes me really nervous. For all the talk about Detroit being underdogs, anyone who counts them out is a fool. They’ve made the playoffs 23 seasons in a row – incredible. They have their fair share of superstars, and their coach, Ken Holland, is a genius as coaches go. Detroit’s one of the teams I was hoping some other team would take out of the playoffs, because they are a good, solid team. I still like Boston’s chances, but they’ll have to play hard and earn their victories. Detroit’s one of those teams that can always be considered to make a deep run every year, and I hope they don’t do it this year for sure.
The other teams that worry me are the California teams, which are beasts right now (except San Jose, they have a great tradition of choking come playoffs). In the east, Philadelphia is playing some really good hockey right now. I don’t think the Pens will win, because of Fleury’s playoff record, and because of the lack of depth in the back six on the team. Chicago’s always a good team in the playoffs, and I wouldn’t be too surprised if we see a rematch between the Bruins and the Blackhawks this year (though I do hope for a different outcome this time).
I am so, so excited for the playoffs to begin! This could really be the year. I’ll be anxiously following the Bruins for (hopefully) the next month, and I hope I don’t need to shave until the Bruins win!
Obligatory prediction: Bruins in 6
