Early this morning, a student was struck by lightening on the University of Waterloo campus near the residence of V1, and she later died of her injuries. Holy shit.
This makes me unbelievably sad and scared. If ever there was a wake up call that nowhere is safe, this is it. Words can’t even express how I feel. I didn’t know the student or anything, but she was a first year student as well, in engineering, and she didn’t even make it a week here in Waterloo, due to no fault of her own. It really sucks. No one deserves to go like this, and I offer my deepest and most sincere condolences to her family. This is truly one of the most tragic events I’ve been witness to in my life.
My residence had a fire drill about half an hour before the tragedy, and we were waiting out by trees as well, which is what was apparently the student’s unfortunate mistake. Of course, we ran for cover when the rain started pouring, but it’s unnerving knowing it could have been any one of us. Sure as hell puts a damper on orientation week.
The weather is god-awful right now…we have a storm of this power maybe once a year in Calgary, and only maybe. Absolutely crazy. The heat too…Jesus. I’m scared to go out during the rain now, even though I know how rare an occurence this event is. You know the weather is insanely intense when your roommate gives you a rundown of what to do in a tornado before the storm hits, just in case. Just awful.
Really hope nothing like this ever happens again. I’m checking out.
